Baby Layette
So what do you really need to have in your baby layette, that collection of basic garments in which your new baby will spend most of her time? Here are some rough estimates, based on doing a load of baby laundry about every other day: Have six to eight cotton onesies for wearing alone or under other garments or blankets. Four to six one-piece Baby Pajamas (sleepers) for daytime and nighttime wear. Six to eight bibs, although baby won't wear these until he is eating solid food (usually five months or later) or drooling from teething (possibly around the same time). Two to four hats or knitted caps (a lot of warmth escapes from a baby's head). Six to eight receiving blankets, as described in the section on Baby Blankets. And six to eight pairs of Baby Socks or booties for keeping small feet warm, a couple of soft terrycloth towels and six to eight washcloths for bathing and cleaning faces. These basics will enable you to keep baby clean and comfortable most of the time, and you can add fun outfits that you choose yourself or are given as presents.
Baby Products
There are baby products for every conceivable situation or activity you might encounter with a baby. A surprising number of these are products for simply transporting baby from one place to another, like Baby Strollers, slings, front carriers, and backpacks. (And car Safety Seats are a whole different topic; see Baby Safety Products.) Then there are products for feeding baby: breastfeeding products like nursing pillows, breast pads, and pumps, and Baby Bottle systems for breast milk or formula feeding. Completely aside from Baby Clothes are soft accessories like Baby Blankets and carseat covers, and cozy wraps to keep baby warm in a stroller. And don't forget Baby Books and keepsake boxes for all the little memories and mementoes of the first year with baby.
