Bassinets
Bassinets are small crib-like beds that usually stand at about the height of an adult bed. They are light enough to move from room to room-many have wheels. Traditionally, a bassinet stands next to the parents' bed at night, for maximum convenience when baby wakes for a feeding. In the daytime, the bassinet can be moved around the house so that you are near the sleeping baby. Another daytime option: a portable playpen or play yard that comes with a bassinet insert that fits onto the top of the play yard and provides a safe and comfortable spot for baby to sleep. Bassinets are convenient and many parents feel that a tiny infant feels more secure sleeping in a small space. A newer type of co-sleeping bassinet can be attached to the parents' bed and the shared side can be left open so that baby sleeps beside one parent, but in a smaller, enclosed space. Bassinets are much smaller and lighter than cribs, so you must stop using them when they are no longer safe for your growing baby. Usually this is when your baby can roll vigorously or sit up, or when your baby reaches a certain weight limit, which varies depending on the type of bassinet. Check your bassinet manufacturer's recommendation.
Baby Gifts
So you want to buy baby gifts for a long-anticipated baby and his or her proud parents! But what to choose? There are baby gifts that are immediately useful, like clothes, supplies, Baby Swings, Baby Toys and Baby Blankets, as well as flowers, gift baskets, and gift certificates that can be used for anything the parents still need (including meals delivered to the house!). Many of these will get used and appreciated early on, but won't survive for posterity, except in pictures and memories. Then there are baby gifts that have little relevance to daily baby care, but enormous sentimental and keepsake value, like silver or pewter cups and spoons, picture frames and other long-lasting presents. Which best suits you and the baby and parents you want to please? Check to see whether the parents have set up a baby registry online or in a store. You may realize that something they still need is the perfect present to come from you.
