Baby Blanket
There are really three kinds of baby blankets, all of them appropriate to give as Baby Gifts. (Baby blankets are a popular gift, so you may want to put a variety of them on your registry.) "Receiving" blankets are smaller blankets of cotton or flannel. They are large enough to swaddle a small baby, but they are also used for catching spills, wiping faces, or covering a small area to put the baby down on. It's nice to have a lot of them around; you'll be surprised how often you'd like to put a clean cloth between your baby and a cold floor, a rug that people have been walking on, someone's clean shirt, or a bedspread.
Crib blankets are for actually keeping your baby warm in the crib and should be used with caution, as you don't want anything in the crib that your baby could get caught or wound up in. Once they get a little mobile, a lot of babies have the trick of scooting down to the end of the crib, and can end up scooting themselves underneath the blanket as well. Pediatricians usually recommend that you dress your baby warmly enough for bed so that there is no need for covers. If covers are necessary, place your baby with his or her feet at the end of the crib, to limit scooting, and cover with a loosely woven baby blanket up to the waist only. The third kind of baby blanket is the decorative blanket that most often comes as a gift (though it can certainly be used on the baby if it is light enough not to be a suffocation hazard). It may be personalized with baby's name or initials and birthday, and is a wonderful keepsake that your child will enjoy looking at later on.
Baby Furniture
Baby furniture brings to mind more than Baby Cribs, Booster Seats, Bassinets, and Cradles. Baby furniture evokes peaceful images of settling a tiny baby into a pretty crib, nursing a tiny infant in a rocking chair, even a playful round of peekaboo while bending over the changing table. Of course, your baby's nursery, or whatever room serves as the center of your baby care activities, will also be the scene of less idyllic moments, as your baby wakes for a 2 a.m. feeding or tries to roll off the changing table as soon as you've got the diaper off. So Baby Nursery Furniture has to be sturdy, safe, and easy for you to use correctly.
